WALT work with a buddy.

Room 4 has been lucky to have been able to work with our Year 4 buddy class, Room 16. They have been working on their inquiry topic, Volcanoes and wanted to share what they had learnt with us. We had fun making a paper volcano and learning some fun facts along the way!

WALT Explore and act on issues and questions that link our science learning to our daily living.

As a part of our inquiry topic, Under the Sea, Room 4 has been looking at the effects of human activity on aquatic animal habitats. We followed the story of 'Freddy the Fish' who was cut out of sponge and soaked up all of the different pollutants that we added to his home as the story went on. It was interesting for us to see all of the different ways that our actions affected Freddy's habitat. Even though we had fun adding all of the different 'pollutants', it made us feel sad to see how dirty Freddy's water had become.

This led us to think of how we could fix what we had done and decided to try to clean Freddy's water and home. We looked at making a water filter out of sand, gravel and coffee filters. We could definitely see a difference between the polluted and filtered water, but it was nowhere near as crystal clear as it had been before. It showed us that pollution is hard to reverse once it is done.

WALT show resilience and give things a go.

Resilience is one of Elm Park School's three main values (3 Rs). It is when we face every new challenge with a positive and can-do problem solving attitude. Room 4 has attended two soccer clinics so far this year and they have been the perfect opportunity to show resilience by giving it a go and trying something new!

Here I am showing resilience by trying my best to balance the ball on my back!

WALT discuss different sea creatures.

Room 4 has been learning about sea creatures for our inquiry topic. We visited the beach and Kelly Tarltons to help us learn more about what life is like in the ocean!

After these trips, we continued to inquire about different sea creatures in class. I have written some facts about the amazing blue whale.

Room 4 has been learning about sea creatures. My favourite sea creature is the blue whale. They are the biggest animal in the world. They can grow up to 30 meters long. They do not have teeth but have baleen plates. They eat tiny krill. Baby blue whales are around 7 meters long.

WALT float on our back.

Room 4 have been swimming three times each week and it has been lovely in the sunny weather! I have become very comfortable in the water and have learned new skills. An important skill that I have learned is how to float on my back. I can do this with a boogie board. It is a great skill to have because it is fun to do and can help to keep me safe if I ever accidentally fall into water.

My next step is to be able to float on my back without a floatation device to help me.

Chinese New Year.

Room 4 celebrated Chinese New Year by making drums. First, we learned about the legend of the monster Nian who came out to terrorise villages at New Year. The people of China learned how to scare the monster away with loud noises and the colour red, like our noisy red drums!
